Taken from wikipedia.com, Mount Merbabu (Indonesian: Gunung
Merbabu) is a dormant stratovolcano in Central
Java province on the Indonesian island of Java. The name
Merbabu could be loosely translated as 'Mountain of Ash' from
the Javanese combined words; Meru means
"mountain" and awu or abu means "ash". Merbabu has really
beautiful view. From the third post you can see Merapi, Sindoro, and Sumbing. I
personally really love to go there again someday. I hope I will go there again.
There are many routes to hike
Merbabu. I personally suggest that you hike from Selo route because I have
hiked Merbabu from there.
From Yogyakarta, take a bus to
Solo, and go down in Kartasura. From there take a bus from Solo to Semarang,
you can get off the bus at Boyolali station. From there, you will be easy to
find transportation to Selo.
If you have been in Selo, there
are many base-camps there. The location is on Genting village, Selo, Boyolali.
You can just hike from there.
The first post is approximately
2.5 hours of hiking, there you can rest. From there, the road is different,
from the gate to 1st post, the road is not too steep, but from 1st post it will
be steeper.
On the way to the 2nd Post,
there is a famous road called "Tikungan Macan."
The tilt of this road is about
70 degrees, and it is very steep, be careful there. If you are not careful, you
will probably get cram like a friend of mine when we hiked there.
To the third post, the road is
constantly uphill. The area is more open and the road is made of sand and
rocks, it is very sloppy.
Time to go to third post from the second post is about 30 minutes,
but the road is very tricky and your body is already tired. If you are already
in there you can build your camps and rest.
The fourth post is called Sabana I. From there you can see a
beautiful open field of green grass. The road to go there is very steep and
sheer. If you already tired don’t push your body.
The summit is still long way ahead. There is another post ahead
called Sabana II. However, I only hiked to the third post because my friends
are already tired, so we don’t want to take risk, we only build a camp on the
third post. As I said before, the view is very beautiful. Here are some photos
which I take:
