Android company was built in October 2003 by Andy Rubin, Rich Miner, Nick Sears and Chris White. Later on in August 2005 the company was bought by Google. The first version of Android was created on September 23, 2008 featured on HTC phone. Then on February 9, 2009 the version 1.1 was created.
The name of the first version of Android is Cupcake and it runs on an android version 1.5. There are enhancements in Cupcake, such as:

I don't have experience in using android cupcake because in 2009 I was still a child and I have no phone at all.
The next version of android is Donut it runs on an android version 1.6. The enhancements are:

Honeycomb
It runs on a version 3.0 of Android. It was targeted for a tablet and the first version which supports tablet devices. In this version, Virtual Buttons were unveiled and make the use of phsyical buttons reduced. That was the big improvement in Honeycomb.
Ice Cream Sandwich
Android version 4.0 is called Ice cream sandwich. Face unlock, data usage analysis, and new applications were unveiled in this version. Also, google has made the domination of green color in android changed by blue.
Jelly Bean
This is the whole new level of android version. My first android phone was Samsung Galaxy Young S6310 which runs on this version, and I love it. According to digitaltrends.com, Refreshed font, expandable notifications, greater widget flexibility, and other features were also added in Jelly Bean, rending it one of the biggest updates to Android so far.
KitKat
Running on a version 4.0, Kitkat bring you something different than Jelly bean. Immersive status bar was the new function in Kitkat. "OK, Google" is also unveiled in this version.
Lollipop
In lollipop, Google makes android more light in color. It was the first version to have Material color from google. It is still the version that you will get if you buy a new phone.
Marshmallow
The biggest improvement is that google now use more "white" color in marshmallow. Also, Volume control was improved, you are now able to control what sounds you will adjust. Security is also improved. In Marshmallow, applications asked for a permission on what they need.
Lastly, There are Nougat and Oreo update on Android. However, I have no experience in using them. So I just stop the discussion on Marshmallow. Thank you.
