Martha was attracted to him for her politeness. This customer would come every two days and buy two loaves of stale bread.  Miss Martha and her sympathetic heart couldn’t bear the thought of him eating stale bread every day. One day she couldn’t bear the thought of him eating stale bread, but she also didn’t want to seem too forward so while the customer was turned away she buttered the stale bread and blushed at the thought of him thinking about her as he ate it. The next day he comes barging in with quite a racket and begins shouting at her in german, the friend has to pull him out of the store before he hurts Miss. Martha can you imagine her shock. She didn’t know what to think luckily the friend is kind enough to inform her “He’s been working hard for three months drawing a plan for a new city hall. It was a prize competition. He finished inking the lines yesterday. You know, a draftsman always makes his drawing in pencil first. When it’s done he rubs out the pencil lines with handfuls of stale bread crumbs.”  The story ends with Martha's regrets and shame.
