Your Name (Japanese: Kimi no Na wa)
is a 2016 anime movie directed by Makoto Shinkai and produced by Comix Wave
Films. It tells the story of Taki Tachibana, a boy who lives at the heart of
Tokyo, and Mitsuha Miyamuzu, a girl from the countryside Japan, the Itomori
City. Their fate began to connect to each other after they started swapping
bodies randomly when they woke up. The novel version of the movie was released
a month before the movie, which has been translated into English now.
First of all, allow me to express
my highest respect to those who have created this masterpiece. The art itself
is not a joke. It’s super seriously made, as expected of the studio. I got
chills already just by looking at the visuals. How they rendered the
countryside, it’s so amazing that I would recommend you to check it out
yourself. Rating by me would be 10/10.
The soundtrack is also amazing.
RADWIMPS sure delivered the insert songs in the bast way they could ever do so.
Especially during the “swapping body” scene, the song “Zen Zen Zense” really
fitted to the scene. The sound effects also made the scenes in the movie alive.
I would rate the soundtrack 9/10.
The main reason I re-watched this
movie twice is because of the story, the plot twist, and the characters.
Although it’s basically about high school life stuff which is pretty cliché among
anime titles, it’s definitely not your regular school life anime. In fact, the
school life has little to no involvement to the story. What amused me is that
when I realized they’re in different timelines. That was the moment when I
gasped, and laughed nervously when screening the premiere. 10/10.
I would arbitrarily say that this
is the best movie of 2016. My overall rating for this movie is 9/10, because it
just lacks one thing: conclusion. It literally just ends with their meeting each other again after a while and that's it. Nothing else is explained, even in the novel version, which I have read
after watching the movie. Although I assume that Shinkai wanted to give the impression of an open ending, it just didn't suit me. But still, it’s a good watch for everyone who loves
unconventional love story told through 2D animation. If you’re wondering if
this movie is safe for a family’s watch, I’d say yes. You can watch it with
your family in the living room, with a nice cup of tea and some snacks, and
enjoy the heartwarming story and stunning visuals together. I personally
recommend it.
