"Stone Burnt Party, Unique Tradition from Papua"



 Every country has their own culture which is born,grow and become habits in specific place, wherever it is. Some culture can be unique from one to another, culture from northern hemisphere can be totally different from southern hemisphere and the difference between these hemisphere is because of so many things, one of the main factor is because of the seasons.

As we know that seasons in northern hemisphere has four seasons while in southern hemisphere almost to all of the  country only has two seasons only, this is also contributed to the culture itself. For example in the Northern hemisphere people used to drink alcohol to warm up theirself when it is snowing and in southern hemisphere mostly in Indonesia people do “Syukuran Hasil Panen” (abundant harvest blessing), beside that there is also a unique tradition in Indonesia called “ “Pesta Bakar Batu” (Stone Burnt Party).

The stone burnt Party was a traditional ritual from Papua that was done as the form of the expression of gratitude for the abundant blessing, for the marriage, for the newborn baby and even for death ceremony. 

This party was often celebrate in the Baliem Valley Region, Paniai and another highland area in Papua. Based on the name,the process of the cooking used the method of burning the stone. Stone Burnt Party was the site to gather for the people there. In this party will be seen how high is the solidarity and the community's Papua togetherness. 

Stone burnt party procession usually consists of three stages, which is the preparations stage, burns the pig and vegetables, and  eats together. The preparations stage was preceded with the search for firewood and the stone that will be utilized to cook. The procession started with piled the stones  on the top of the fireplace and burned until the stones become hot. Along with it,the man digging deep holes and then in the lowest part was organized measuring big stones which is has been given the base of banana leaves and foliage before, next put down the pork chop, afterwards was closed again with the banana leaves, foliage and also burnt stone. After that, Hipere (sweet potatoes) was compiled above. The following layer was the burnt stone again. Afterwards vegetables placed above. Further the hole was piled again with grass and the burnt stone. Approximately the food is cooked in 60 until 90 minutes . After the food was ripe, all of the grass and hot stone will be opened and the food is spread out.





All the residents will cluster surrounded this food. The head of the Ethnic Group will become the first person who accepted this food. Further all will receive the same allocation, the man, the woman, parents, and children. After that, the inhabitants then began to eat this food. Bakar Batu Party was the agenda that most waited for by the resident of Papua countryside ethnic groups. They also were prepared to spend money in the number that was big to finance this party.
There are so many unique culture in Papua which is odd but that is the reason why we called it culture because it is unique.
