Meditation can be defined as a practice where an individual focuses his or her mind on a particular object, thought or activity to achieve a mentally clear and emotionally calm state. Meditation may be used to reduce stress, anxiety, depression, and pain. Meditation literally means an activity that rearrange minds, way of thinking, and muse. Meditation is for an activity to analyze, make a conclusion, and taking action to solve problems.

Meditation is usually misinterpreted as a useless wasting time activity. Meditation is a control of mind to reach a harmony in life. According to Hidup Sehat dan Seimbang dengan Yoga by Pujiastuti Sindhu, the purpose of meditation is to train the mind to be relax and focus.

The advantages of meditating are :

1. Effective relaxation therapy

Effective relaxation therapy to reduce pain. The meditation technique by saying words and focus, can reduce the pain on back, joint, and head. (National Institutes of Health, 1996)

2. Sustain life of cancer

The people who suffer a chronic breast cancer can sustain their life up to 18 months better than the other who don’t do it. (Stanford University Medical Center)

3. Restoring the immunity

Our immunity increased and ready to face the bactery or virus that can ruin our health when our body is relaxed. (John Hopkins, University School of Medicine)

4. Reducing insomnia

Before asleep, we need relaxed mind to sleep well. By meditating, our mind is totally relaxed and pleasant.

5. Reduce stress

Meditation allows people to take charge of their own nervous system and emotions. “Studies have shown improved ability to regulate emotions in the brain,” said Emma Seppala, Stanford University researcher.

6. Increases self-awareness

Meditation taught us to recognize our own anger and become more detached from it. It cleared our mind and calmed us down. When we take more time to dive inside ourselves, we are more comfortable showing who we are.

7. Slows aging

Studies show that meditation changes brain physiology to slow aging. “Cognition seems to be preserved in meditators,” says Sara Lazar, a Harvard University researcher. Meditators have longer telomeres, the caps on chromosomes indicative of biological age.


By meditating, we can be healthy. Meditation is not a useless wasting time activity. Many advantages mentioned above. Try to have a meditation and be healthy.
