Characters:
- Hester Pryynne:  Hester is the protagonist and the wearer of the scarlet letter that gives the book its title. The letter, a patch of fabric in the shape of an “A,” signifies that Hester is an “adulterer.” As a young woman, Hester married an elderly scholar, Chillingworth.
- Roger Chillingworth (Mr Pryynne): is actually Hester’s husband in disguise. He is much older than she is and had sent her to America while he settled his affairs in Europe.
- Pearl: Hester’s illegitimate daughter Pearl is a young girl with a moody, mischievous spirit and an ability to perceive things that others do not
- Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale : Dimmesdale is a young man who achieved fame in England as a pastor and then emigrated to America. In a moment of weakness, he and Hester became lovers. Although he will not confess it publicly, he is the father of Hester's daughter, Pearl.

Plot and Summary:
The Scarlet Letter is a nickname, which took place about a century after the Queen of Elizabeth 1 came to power in the United States. The nickname is a social sanction aimed at people who prove to commit adultery. A scarlet letter on the clothes of the adulterers, so everyone can see it.

Hester Pryynne, is a beautiful woman who gets a scarlet letter. Everyone calls him with a scarlet letter. She is the wife of Mr Pryynne, a man from England. Hester Pryynne and Mr Pryynne decided to move from Amsterdam to New England, but Mr Pryynne had to work away from his wife. For two years lives in New England,  Hester Pryynne lives alone without her husband.

During Mr Pryyne's work, Hester Pryynne makes a forbidden relationship with another man, so she becomes pregnant and gives birth to a baby, whereas, for 2 years she lives apart with her husband. She was sanctioned to wear a scarlet letter in her chest during her lifetime. Actually, she was also given the execution punishmen.
As long as he is on trial, Hester will never tell who the man is. He also does not tell anyone that he already has a husband.

Arriving on the day when Hester will be executed, a young pastor named Arthur Dimmesdale helped Hester. The pastor reduced  Hester's punishment. She have to used scarlet letter only, and saved from the execution. At that time, when Hester was being punished in front of the New England people, Mr Pryynne  arrived in New England and saw the incident. He was shocked and disappointed at his wife. He was very surprised to see his wife with a baby who is certainly not his daughter. Mr. Prynne decided to didnt tell anyone about his identity. Then he meets Hester in jail and tells Hester to hide that Mr Prynne is her husband.

After being released from prison, Hester Pryynne lives in a small house, away from the people's home. He lives with his daugter, named Pearl. To support his daughter, Hester Pryynne works as a tailor. While mr Prynne, he lives in New England with the aim to knowing who the man who has made his wife pregnant. Mr Prynne became a doctor in New England and changed his name to Roger Chillingworth. He took care of a young pastor who has a seriouse ill. That pastor was Arthur Dimmasdale. The health of Dimmasdale is getting worse.

As long as being a doctor for Dimmasdale, Mr. Prynne got a fact that Dimmasdale is the man who made his wife pregnant. Dimmasdale then escaped from Mr Pryynne. He went to see Hester Pryynne. Hester Pryynne and Dimmasdale then decided to go away from New England  because everyone will know the fact. But before leaving, Dimmasdalle must finished his work as a pastor. He have to do his sermon. He decides it is his last sermon. When he would do his sermon, suddenly Dimmasdale changed his mind. He decided to open the facts of his relationship with Hester Pryynne in front of the people of New England. The end of the story is, Dimmesdale died after revealing his sin. He died in front of Hester, and the people of New England.
